Department of Chemistry

 

Overview

The Department of Chemistry started in the academic year 2001, the year of inception of the college and is handling the “Engineering Chemistry” (both theory & practical) for classes of I & II semester engineering (all branches) students. The department has a well-equipped laboratory with the latest instruments to conduct the experiments prescribed by VTU.

The curriculum integrates core of applied chemistry with a body of engineering in a manner, which allows chemical knowledge to be put in to the practice. To cater the needs of the students, we have well qualified, committed and experienced faculties. In addition to handling of ‘Engineering Chemistry’, we are also teaching the ‘Environmental Science’ subject. College learning resource centre, has a rich collection of books and journals in engineering chemistry. Over 1200 books with various titles are available. The library has subscribed to several journals and has provided access to various E-resources in chemistry. In addition to the online subscribed (100 journals as E-Resources from Springer Publications. We have the following subscribed journals in Chemistry:

  • International Journal of Waste Water treatment and    Green Chemistry.
  • International Journal of Chemistry Applications

”To ‘promote and impart the applied engineering chemistry knowledge and transform the wisdom into action”.

Mission

  • To foster the inquisitiveness in students and make them understand the fundamentals of applied chemical science and technology.
  • To inform the students of the latest development in applied engineering chemistry, so that they can exploit it for development of technologies in their respective core disciplines.
  • To infuse the innovative research attitude in the student, so that they could be an innovator or inventor of tomorrow.

 

Long Term Goals

  • To build up the department potentially to embark upon research along with academics and motivating the faculty towards research. As all faculties have doctoral degrees, emphasis is given on getting funds from funding agencies. If possible to have consultancy services and collaborative ventures with national laboratories/contract research laboratories.
  • To develop effective teaching-learning modules.
  • To adopt the modern trends in education concepts, (smart board use/ HowStuffWorks-videos/Ted-Talks/VTU-Resources/ NPTEL course materials/ MIT – Open Course Materials).
  • Use of ‘Moodle software’ an open source tool for online assignment, quiz conduction and circulation of PDF notes/QPs/Model QPs/IAs of Previous Years, uploading videos from reliable sources.

 

Course Outcomes

  • Understand the concept of free energy, electrochemical & concentration cells, classical & modern batteries & fuel cells.
  • Apply electroplating & electroless plating processes in corrosion engineering models and its fabrication.
  • Utilization, production and consumption of solar energy and its application in different useable forms. Understand the concept of classical & modern batteries & fuel cells.
  • Understand the Knowledge of environmental pollution and different techniques of water purification.
  • Understand the Fundamental principles and Applications of nanomaterials and different techniques of instrumental methods.

Course Learning Objectives

  • Master the basic knowledge of engineering chemistry for building technical competencies in industries, research and development.
  • To understand the importance of energy systems, environmental pollution, waste management, water technology, instrumental methods and nanomaterials.
  • To develop knowledge in the field of free energy, chemical equilibrium, electroplating and corrosion sciences.

Research Facilities

The Chemistry department has well qualified, experienced and higly motivated towards research and the department is recognized as research centre by VTU, Belagavi since 2018. Dr. Umesh Laddi, Professor and Head, is guiding one candidate, Mrs. Vedavathi R (USN: 1CG19PCT01) for her Ph.D., degree and now completing her course work examination. The department faculties have published 65 research papers in Scopus indexed, peer-reviewed journals and presented their work in many national and international conferences. Apart from regular teaching, faculties have applied for funding from agencies such as VGST, DST and SERB to establish the infrastructure of the research centre.
